Ulster clinches first Region XV

basketball berth in 10 years

Playing one of its best games of the season, Ulster County Community College ended a 10-year drought Thursday night by securing an elusive Region XV men’s basketball tournament berth.

“It feels to be going to regions. All this hard work paid off finally,” said Ulster coach Harold Rayford Jr. after the Senators secured the eighth and final seed with an 87-79 victory over Rockland.

“The monkey’s off our back,” he said. “The guys really wanted it. They knew our backs were against the wall.”

Johnathan Williams scored 25 points, Josh Behagen connected for 24 and Emmanuel Porter had 20 to power Ulster, which improved its record to 5-13 overall and 5-7 in Region XV.

The Senators started the game sluggishly and actually trailed Rockland 23-6. Strong defensive play turned the trick and Ulster rallied to lead 43-40 at halftime.

Rockland kept the game tight by hitting 10 3-point field goals, but the Senators — known all season for their poor foul shooting — sealed the triumph by going 20-for-28 at the line.

The Region XV Tournament is Feb. 25-27 at Westchester.
